Mental Health in Schools – Building Capacity

The education system plays an important role in contributing to enhanced positive mental health in children and youth. Promoting and supporting positive mental health and welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe learning environments is vital to ensuring children and youth are resilient better able to learn, achieve success and build healthy relationships. What professional learning opportunities are you providing to your teachers and school leaders to support students’ mental health?

Mental Health First Aid for teachers has been beneficial to building capacity and understanding.
Parabytes training for all staff has contributed to the overall wellbeing of staff.
New teachers are all trained in Building Brains.
Divisional Wellness day for all staff including bus drivers, maintenance etc... was overwhelmingly well received.
Collaborative Problem Solving for all Assistant Principals and LST's.
District wide wellness symposium.
Collaborative Response Model utilized in all schools.
Health Champions coming together once a month.
Wellness Committee moving towards a diversity/equity/pride focus and lens.
Therapy dogs who are in schools to support students and staff.
