What risks, barriers and biases must system education leaders mitigate?

  • What are the ethical considerations related to AI in teaching and learning?

Biases (there are societal biases, parent biases, teacher biases, etc.): the perspective that using AI is cheating, that all AI is created equally and that AI is the 'answer' to everything (like in accommodations)
Risks: cognitive atrophy -- are we teaching students to critically analyze & think, or are we going to lose that? Will students 'check out' once they use AI to find the 'answer'. Effective pedagogy will remain a top priority. Privacy concerns are a risk when people are using it without a proper understanding of the tool and how the data is used. Are we already behind the times? How are we thinking ahead to be proactive vs. reactive? How early is too early to be sharing this with students? What are some unintended (or unforeseen consequences) or using AI with students of all ages?
Barriers: The need to change how we teach in order to support the effective use of AI. A barrier could be that people are fearful of it and want to ban/block AI apps. How do we continue to consider ethics and policy while creating opportunities for our teachers and students to explore the tool? How do we alleviate the risks while still providing opportunities? Are WE the barriers to our students who will be using AI the most?

Ethical Considerations:
How do you teach students (and teachers) about the positive aspects of AI, but also of the drawbacks & dangers?
It is important to bring parents along in the learning, not just teachers, as we can get a lot of pushback when we don't do this
Equity - how do we ensure all students have the access they need (and the ability) to AI to support their learning in the most effective way
What is it, as a system, that we want to prepare our students to do?
The ethical implication might actually be that it is our role to shift the education system to focus on the global competencies as opposed to the system we are currently in (preparing students for post-secondary, specific career paths, focus on grades, etc.) What is the purpose of education? How does AI impact this purpose?
